The Story

A man is facing charges for allegedly trying to kidnap an 18-year-old woman, but witnesses intervened, California authorities reported. The incident happened just before midnight on August 31 in Chico. The woman was walking past a bar when two men inside noticed her, according to a September 16 release from the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.

The witnesses, who were playing pool at the bar, observed that she seemed intoxicated and kept an eye on her. They saw a white van pull up next to her, and the driver got out and grabbed her, officials said.

The woman struggled and managed to escape but fell and hit her head, making her appear unconscious. One of the witnesses shouted at the man, prompting him to get back in the van and drive away. Chico State University officers assisted the woman, and Chico police took over the investigation.

After reviewing security footage, authorities found that the van had been following the woman down the street for some time. The suspect, identified as Jose Alvarado-Rodriguez, 49, was arrested on September 12.

Alvarado-Rodriguez has been charged with attempted kidnapping and is being held without bail until his next court appearance on September 18.
