Two Attacks on Women Highlight the Need for Self-Defense in Western New York

Attacks on Women

At Protect Her Path, we emphasize the critical importance of self-defense training and awareness for women in all communities. Recent attacks on women in Western New York highlight the urgent need for women to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves. The incidents in Clarence and Buffalo not only underscore the reality of personal safety threats but also demonstrate the value of quick thinking and self-defense preparedness. These events have prompted an increased interest in self-defense classes, reinforcing our commitment to providing women with the tools and training necessary to stay safe and confident in their daily lives.

The Story

In the past week, two separate attacks on women in Western New York have heightened concerns about personal safety and underscored the importance of self-defense training.

In Clarence, a Cheektowaga woman reported being dragged into a car after being followed home from a bar. Meanwhile, in Buffalo, a woman managed to fend off an attacker in Shoshone Park while taking a shortcut on her way home.

These incidents have prompted an increase in inquiries about self-defense classes, particularly those geared towards women, at SPAR Self Defense in Clarence. Co-owner Bill Long shared his thoughts on the recent Shoshone Park attack, praising the survivor’s quick response.

“She didn’t just freeze. She reacted. In any situation like that, immediate action is essential,” Long stated.

Jennifer Campos, a self-defense instructor, also commended the Buffalo woman’s quick thinking. “It’s amazing that she got away,” Campos said. “I always tell the women in my class that the number one thing is to have good situational awareness. Always be aware of your surroundings. And if you do get attacked by anybody, fight as hard as you can.”

Long emphasized the importance of prevention and offered some practical advice: “Know where you’re going. Know your surroundings. Awareness and avoidance. No. 1, No. 2 if you can, do not go alone. Go with someone else. Go with your dog. No. 3 Learn to defend yourself in a structured self-defense environment.”

He also advised against using cell phones and headphones in public, as they can distract from potential dangers.

These recent attacks on women serve as a reminder of the importance of self-defense skills and staying vigilant in everyday situations.
