In an incredible display of strength and survival instinct, a 31-year-old woman successfully defended herself from a brutal attack, biting off part of her assailant’s tongue during the encounter. This serves as a powerful reminder that self-defense isn’t just about physical strength, but also about mental resilience and quick thinking.

The assault occurred late at night in Haluvhimbi, near Thohoyandou, on Tuesday, September 24. The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was returning home after visiting a local tavern when she realized someone was following her.

“Before I could figure out what was happening, a man grabbed me by the neck and started choking me. I tried to fight back, but it felt like I was fighting a losing battle. Before I knew it, I was on the ground,” she recalled.

Realizing her life was at risk, the woman made a critical decision to outsmart her attacker. She pretended to give up, telling him to do what he wanted, as long as he didn’t hurt her. As the man began to assault her, she made her move.

“He started kissing me and touching me, and that’s when I gathered my strength. I bit down hard on his tongue and grabbed his genitals. He weakened, and I managed to escape,” she recounted.

At Protect Her Path, we highlight the importance of situational awareness and the value of training with self-defense techniques, no matter what form they take. This woman’s actions demonstrate how mental fortitude and quick thinking can be the difference between life and death in a violent confrontation. While it’s essential to have self-defense tools like pepper spray, a stun gun, or even a firearm, it’s equally important to understand that your mind and body are your first lines of defense.

After fleeing to a nearby house for help, the victim and several residents returned to the scene, finding part of the man’s tongue and her phone. The incident, however, left her deeply traumatized.

“This ordeal has left me with injuries and a constant sense of fear. I can’t get the smell of blood out of my mind, and even drinking water feels strange. But above all, I’m thankful to be alive,” she said.

Community leader Emmanuel Ndou praised her bravery, calling her a hero for fighting back. This situation highlights the need for more education and empowerment for women in self-defense, something we at Protect Her Path are deeply committed to. Every woman deserves the knowledge and tools to protect herself, especially in life-threatening situations.

The attacker, 28-year-old Mulalo Bika ‘Frazer,’ was arrested after seeking treatment at a local hospital for his injuries. His case will be heard in court on October 7.

This incident is a sobering reminder that the fight for personal safety and self-defense is real, but women are not powerless. At Protect Her Path, we encourage everyone to learn the skills needed to protect themselves and to stay vigilant. Stories like this remind us all how crucial it is to be prepared for any situation.
