In a powerful story of survival and resilience, Kelly Gandt bravely stepped forward to share her experience of overcoming a terrifying attack. By openly discussing her ordeal, she not only found her own voice but also aims to empower other women to take control of their safety. Kelly’s journey is a testament to the strength found in sharing one’s story and the importance of self-defense in building confidence and courage.

Six months ago, Kelly Gandt experienced a life-altering event. On March 2, while returning home from a bar in Buffalo, a man followed her to her driveway in Cheektowaga, attacked her, and forced her into his vehicle. In a brave act of resistance, Gandt grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to crash, allowing her to escape to safety.

This week, 24-year-old Abel Gebrehawaria was sentenced to five years in prison for the kidnapping. Despite the trauma Gandt faced and the nightmares that followed, she has decided to take control of her story and no longer live in fear.

It’s a wake-up call that this can happen to anyone, anywhere.” Stefanie Kopecki, owner of Hype Fitness Studio

Believing in the power of sharing her experience, Gandt has teamed up with Hype Fitness Studio and SPAR Self Defense to offer a self-defense class, aiming to empower women with the skills and confidence they need to protect themselves. “If I’m encouraging other women to have a voice and come forward with their stories, it’s important for me to fully own mine,” she shared.

Gandt’s journey has been about finding her voice and advocating for women’s safety, especially against violence and domestic abuse. With the support of Hype Fitness, she has found the strength to speak out, both in person and on social media, advocating for other victims of violence.

Hype Fitness instructor Rachael Veronda highlighted the impact of Gandt’s story, saying, “It’s a wake-up call that this can happen to anyone, anywhere.” Stefanie Kopecki, the owner of Hype Fitness Studio, expressed pride in offering a space where women can not only work on self-development but also learn how to defend themselves.

Gandt’s efforts have been making a difference, as she notes that women who take the self-defense classes leave with a renewed sense of pride in their ability to stand up for themselves. Her message is clear: many women may feel powerless or unsure about how to defend themselves or speak up after an assault, but with the right support and training, they can find their voice and strength.
