PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS, Brooklyn (WABC) — A terrifying incident was caught on camera as a man followed a woman into her building near Prospect Park and then tried to choke her from behind.
The woman screamed for help and fought back, which thankfully caused her attacker to flee. However, the community is now on high alert as police search for the suspect.
The 25-year-old woman had just walked up a few steps into the lobby and was heading towards the mailboxes when the suspect pushed the elevator button and waited, unaware that security cameras were capturing everything.
He then targeted the woman, walked up the steps behind her, and put his arm around her neck. The woman managed to kick him as they struggled for several seconds.
“It’s shocking because he was just a few feet behind her,” said a neighbor who preferred to remain anonymous.
The incident occurred on Thursday night around 11 PM in a building near the intersection of Ocean and Parkside Avenues in Brooklyn.
The woman told police that as the man had his arm around her neck, she yelled for help and begged him to stop. He responded by telling her to “shut up” but then suddenly released her and walked away as if nothing had happened.
The woman immediately called 911, making sure the attacker didn’t return. Thankfully, she wasn’t physically harmed.
“There have been a lot of strange things happening in this building. I’ve been followed inside before myself,” said resident Carlos Vasquez.
