A Texas mother, Genna Skolnik, is speaking out after a terrifying near-kidnapping of her children and their friends, which was caught on her home security camera. The incident occurred on Monday, as Skolnik’s sons, Zachary and Jonathan, were playing outside with their 9-year-old friends in Dallas.

Skolnik first shared the footage with a local news station and later spoke with “Good Morning America” about the ordeal. She recalled hearing commotion and screaming from outside, prompting her to check on the kids.

Zachary recounted how the situation quickly became alarming when two vehicles approached the group, and the drivers tried to lure them into the car. The boys immediately ran towards their home, with Zachary screaming that someone was trying to kidnap them.

The security footage shows a man in a white T-shirt and shorts getting out of a white SUV and chasing after Jonathan, attempting to lure him into the vehicle by mentioning a football in the back. Jonathan bravely refused, telling the man he didn’t talk to strangers before running away.

Skolnik quickly came outside with her phone to record the incident, which led the suspect to flee. However, she managed to capture a photo of the SUV’s license plate.

Shockingly, earlier that same day, just a few miles away, another attempted kidnapping was caught on camera. In that incident, a teenage girl was seen hiding behind a neighbor’s car to avoid being taken by a stranger. The car’s owner, Shane Burke, said the girl, clearly shaken, came to his door for help, explaining that someone had been following her and making her feel uncomfortable.

Safety experts like Callahan Walsh from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children urge parents to talk with their kids about staying safe, especially as they return to school. Walsh emphasizes that children should be cautious of strangers in vehicles and be aware of common tactics used by kidnappers, such as asking for directions or offering candy.

Parents are also advised not to include their children’s names on backpacks and to be mindful of the information they share on social media, particularly around back-to-school time, to protect their kids’ safety.

Authorities are still searching for suspects in both cases, which do not appear to be connected. The Skolnik family feels incredibly fortunate that their quick thinking helped prevent a potentially tragic outcome.

“We were very lucky. And we’re very grateful,” said Genna Skolnik.
