Things to Consider and Steps to Take if You’re Being Followed

Being followed is a terrifying experience, but staying calm and taking proactive steps can help improve your safety. Here’s what to keep in mind if you suspect someone is following you:

  1. Stay Aware:
    • Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, pay attention to your surroundings and observe the person’s behavior.
    • Avoid distractions like looking at your phone or wearing headphones.
  2. Change Your Route:
    • Cross the street or take an unexpected turn. This can help you determine if the person is genuinely following you.
    • Head towards a well-lit, populated area like a store, gas station, or restaurant.
  3. Make Yourself Visible:
    • If possible, call out to someone nearby or pretend to greet someone to signal you’re not alone.
    • Keep moving towards areas where you can seek help or attract attention.
  4. Call for Help:
    • Use your phone to call 911 and clearly explain your location and the situation.
    • If you have a safety app, activate its emergency features to alert contacts or authorities.
  5. Defend Yourself if Necessary:
    • Carry and be prepared to use self-defense tools like pepper spray, a personal alarm, or other items you’re trained to handle.
    • If you’re attacked, fight back and make as much noise as possible to draw attention.
  6. After Escaping:
    • Immediately report the incident to the police, providing a detailed description of the person and their actions.
    • Take note of any identifying features like clothing, height, or other characteristics that can help authorities.

This story highlights the importance of situational awareness and preparedness. The victim’s quick reaction to fight back and escape likely saved her from further harm. It’s a reminder that self-defense starts with being aware of your surroundings and having a plan in place.
