Empowering Women Through Self-Defense: Kelly Gandt’s Story of Survival and Strength
In a powerful story of survival and resilience, Kelly Gandt bravely stepped forward to share her experience of overcoming a terrifying attack. By openly discussing her ordeal, she not only found her own voice but also aims to empower other women to take control of their safety. Kelly’s journey is a testament to the strength found in sharing one’s story and the importance of self-defense in building confidence and courage.
Six months ago, Kelly Gandt experienced a life-altering event. On March 2, while returning home from a bar in Buffalo, a man followed her to her driveway in Cheektowaga. He attacked her and forced her into his vehicle. Gandt fought back, grabbing the steering wheel and causing a crash. She escaped to safety.
This week, 24-year-old Abel Gebrehawaria was sentenced to five years in prison for the kidnapping. Despite the trauma and nightmares, Gandt chose to take control of her story. She refuses to live in fear.
It’s a wake-up call that this can happen to anyone, anywhere.” Stefanie Kopecki, owner of Hype Fitness Studio
Gandt believes in the power of sharing her experience. She partnered with Hype Fitness Studio and SPAR Self Defense to offer a self-defense class. Her goal is to empower women with skills and confidence. “If I encourage women to speak up, I must fully own my story,” she shared.
Gandt’s journey has been about finding her voice and advocating for women’s safety, especially against violence and domestic abuse. With Hype Fitness’s support, she found the strength to speak out. Now, she advocates for other victims of violence in person and on social media.
Hype Fitness instructor Rachael Veronda highlighted the impact of Gandt’s story, saying, “It’s a wake-up call that this can happen to anyone, anywhere.” Stefanie Kopecki, the owner of Hype Fitness Studio, expressed pride in offering a space where women can not only work on self-development but also learn how to defend themselves.
Gandt’s efforts are making a difference. Women leave her self-defense classes with pride in their ability to stand up for themselves. Her message is clear. Many feel powerless after an assault, but with support and training, they can regain their voice and strength.
