We believe in the importance of being prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones. Recently, a brave woman in Baker City faced an unexpected and frightening situation when an intruder entered her home. This incident highlights the significance of having a plan, understanding self-defense, and knowing when and how to act.

A woman from Baker City, Oregon, took decisive action when an intruder entered her home in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11. The incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. when 36-year-old Brandon Douglas Culbertson sneaked into Sidney Luebberke and Luetta Holtz’s home through an unlocked sliding door.

Luebberke and Holtz were asleep when Culbertson entered their bedroom, claiming he was looking for a woman named “Rebecca.” Shocked and alarmed, the couple informed him that they didn’t know him or understand his intentions.

Culbertson, who had oddly removed his shoes and socks, insisted he had stayed in the house before, which the couple denied. Acting quickly, Holtz retrieved a .22 caliber revolver from her nightstand to protect them. She instructed Culbertson to sit on the porch while they called the police. Unfortunately, the Baker City Police Department had no patrols available at that time, leaving them to handle the situation on their own.

As Culbertson grew more agitated and began mumbling to himself, he ignored Holtz’s commands. When he attempted to walk away, Holtz fired two warning shots, not intending to harm but to deter him. This moment proved pivotal, as Culbertson continued to leave despite the warning.

After he left, the couple provided Officer Josh Chandler with a detailed description, which led to Culbertson’s arrest at a nearby gas station. He was charged with first-degree criminal trespassing and failing to register as a sex offender, with bail set at $5,000. His court appearance is scheduled for October 1st.

While firing warning shots is often discouraged, as it did not control the situation here, it’s recommended to focus on gathering as much information as possible if a suspect is attempting to flee. Details like descriptions, photos, and videos can greatly aid police.

To enhance home safety, consider installing a security system and always ensure doors are locked, especially at night.
