On Friday, July 26, a 30-year-old man from New Milford, Craig Herbert, was arrested for an attempted sexual assault at the Shops at Riverside in Hackensack. According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, Herbert followed a woman into a restroom at the shopping center located at Hackensack Avenue and Route 4. Once inside, he shoved her to the floor and attempted to sexually assault her.

However, the woman fought off her attacker with remarkable courage and immediately called 9-1-1. Her quick thinking and determination saved her from further harm. And also played a crucial role in his capture. Surveillance footage from the shopping center helped police identify Herbert, who was later tracked down and arrested.

Herbert now faces charges of second-degree attempted sexual assault, third-degree criminal restraint, fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and simple assault. He has been remanded to Bergen County Jail as he awaits his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
